TCS interview questions (2026) — TR and HR rounds

TCS hires at scale through NQT, campus and lateral drives. The technical round stays close to fundamentals and your final-year project, while the HR round tests relocation, service agreement comfort and long-term intent.

How the process runs

  1. 1Aptitude / NQT online test (quant, reasoning, verbal, coding)
  2. 2Technical round (TR) — fundamentals, project deep dive, one coding problem
  3. 3Managerial round for laterals — delivery, escalation and client handling
  4. 4HR round — relocation, shifts, joining timeline, salary expectation

Top 5 questions, with what they're really testing

1. Tell me about yourself.

Why they ask: The interviewer is deciding which thread to pull for the next 20 minutes. A loose answer gets you random questions; a structured one steers the round.

How to answer: Give 4 lines: who you are today, one project or role with a measurable result, the skills you used, and why this role at TCS. End on the role, not on your hobbies.

2. Explain your final-year project / most recent project end to end.

Why they ask: TCS checks whether you actually built it or only wrote the report. They probe the part you sound least confident about.

How to answer: Cover problem, your specific contribution, tech stack, one hard bug you fixed, and the outcome in numbers. Be honest about what teammates built.

3. What is the difference between an abstract class and an interface?

Why they ask: A classic screening question for OOP depth — they want the 'when would you use which', not the textbook definition.

How to answer: Define both in one line each, then give a design example from your own project where you chose one over the other and why.

4. Are you comfortable relocating anywhere in India and working in shifts?

Why they ask: TCS staffs projects across delivery centres. Hesitation here is the most common HR-round rejection reason.

How to answer: If you are willing, say yes plainly and mention any constraint once, with a reason. Do not negotiate location in the HR round if you want the offer.

5. Why should we hire you over other candidates with the same degree?

Why they ask: They are testing self-awareness and whether you can sell one differentiator.

How to answer: Pick one: a niche skill, a real deployment, a certification, or a domain you already know. Back it with one sentence of evidence and stop talking.
